What to Wear to an Amalfi Coast Wedding

The short answer: for a daytime Amalfi Coast wedding, wear a midi dress in a natural fabric — linen, cotton, silk or viscose — in a print or a saturated colour, with a block heel or an elegant flat. For the evening, go longer and richer: a floor-length gown, a satin jumpsuit, or a dressy two-piece. Avoid white, cream and ivory. Bring something to cover your shoulders for the church. And whatever you choose, make sure you can walk down two hundred steps in it, because you will.

Why the Amalfi Coast has its own dress code

Most wedding guest guides treat destination weddings as one category. The Amalfi Coast is not one category. It is a vertical coastline where the towns are built into cliffs, the streets are stairs, and the transport between venues is often a boat.

That terrain does more to determine what works than the invitation does. I have watched beautifully dressed women arrive at a Positano ceremony pink, breathless and barefoot, carrying the heels they wore for the first forty steps. The dress was right. The engineering was wrong.

So this guide is organised the way the weekend actually happens.

What does the dress code on the invitation actually mean here?

Formal or black tie. Floor-length. A gown, or a genuinely dressy jumpsuit. Fabric matters more than in a ballroom — you will be outdoors, and heavy synthetics do not survive an August evening on the coast.

Cocktail. Midi length is the safest read, and the most flattering in photographs taken on stone terraces. Knee-length works. Mini reads young for a wedding unless the couple has said otherwise.

Semi-formal or "Mediterranean chic". This is the most common instruction on Amalfi invitations and the least helpful. Read it as: a printed or coloured midi, elevated sandals, real jewellery, and no beachwear. It is not an invitation to wear a sundress.

No dress code given. Dress one notch above what you think is needed. Italian weddings run more formal than American ones, and guests are photographed constantly.

Fabric is the decision that matters most

Wedding season on the coast runs May to October, and June through September is genuinely hot — high 80s Fahrenheit with humidity coming off the water, and very little shade on a cliffside terrace.

Choose linen, cotton, silk, viscose or a linen blend. These breathe, they move in the wind coming off the sea, and they photograph with texture rather than shine.

Avoid heavy polyester, thick crepe, anything with a fused lining, and anything that needs shapewear you will regret by the second hour. If a dress is fully lined in synthetic, it will be a long afternoon.

One practical note that no one tells you: pack a fabric that recovers. You are travelling with these clothes, often onto a boat, and there is rarely an iron.

The shoe problem

This is where most guests go wrong, and it is worth being blunt about.

Positano is roughly five hundred steps from the top of town to the beach. Ravello sits above a thousand-foot drop with cobbled approaches. Ferry docks are wet. Stiletto heels are not merely uncomfortable here; they are unusable, and they sink into the gaps between cobbles.

What works: a block heel of two to three inches, a wedge, an embellished flat sandal, or a low kitten heel with an ankle strap. What works even better: wear flats to travel, and carry the heels for the ceremony and the photographs. Every Italian woman on that coast is doing exactly this.

Can I wear white to an Amalfi Coast wedding?

No. The rule holds in Italy exactly as it does at home, and it extends further than people assume — ivory, cream, champagne and blush-that-photographs-white all fall on the wrong side of it.

This matters more at a destination wedding, because the light is bright and white-adjacent fabric goes fully white in a photograph taken on a sunlit terrace. If you are unsure whether a shade reads as cream, it does.

The exception is a print with a white ground and a strong pattern over it — a blue-and-white floral, for instance, reads as pattern rather than as white. Use judgement, and if the couple has asked for all-white, that instruction overrides everything here.

What to wear to each part of the weekend

Amalfi weddings are rarely a single event. Plan for three or four.

Welcome dinner. Usually a terrace or a family restaurant. A printed midi or an elevated two-piece. This is the most photographed casual event of the weekend.

The ceremony. If it is in a church — and many are, including the cathedrals at Amalfi and Ravello — your shoulders must be covered to enter. A light wrap, a shawl or a cropped jacket that you can remove immediately afterwards. This is enforced, and being turned away at the door is a real thing that happens.

The reception. Longer, richer, more jewellery. If the reception is separate from the ceremony, this is where a gown or a satin jumpsuit earns its place.

The pool or beach day. Almost every Amalfi wedding weekend has one. Bring a proper cover-up, not a beach towel and optimism.

Farewell brunch. The easiest and most forgiving — a linen set or a simple dress, flat sandals.

Yes. Black is entirely acceptable at Italian weddings, particularly in the evening, and it is not read as mournful the way it once was. In full August daylight it will be hot and it will absorb sun, so save it for the reception rather than an afternoon ceremony.

Are long dresses too much for a daytime ceremony?

Not on this coast. A floor-length dress in a light fabric is a common and elegant daytime choice at Amalfi weddings, and it handles wind on a terrace better than a short hem does.

What about a jumpsuit?

A jumpsuit in a dressy fabric is a strong choice and a practical one — it solves both the stairs and the wind. Choose satin, crepe de chine or a fluid viscose rather than anything stiff.

How many outfits should I pack?

Plan on four for a standard three-day wedding weekend: welcome dinner, ceremony and reception, pool or beach day, and farewell brunch. Separates that recombine will save you a bag.

Do I need to cover my shoulders?

For a church ceremony, yes — this is enforced at the cathedrals along the coast. Carry a wrap or a light jacket you can remove the moment you are outside.

What shoes should I actually bring?

One pair of block heels or wedges for the ceremony, one pair of elegant flat sandals for everything else, and something you can genuinely walk on stairs in. Leave the stilettos at home.
